M12 connector with transformer

M12 connector with transformer

The new Harting M12 Magnetics is an IP65/67 protected combination of Ethernet connector and transformer. The M12 socket contains transformers and all the other necessary components that would otherwise take up space on the circuit board, while maintaining the same size socket as before.

The device side M12 socket stays the same size but already contains the transformer unit required for Ethernet. In the past, transformers and various other electrical components had to be accommodated next to the socket on the circuit board. Now they are integrated as part of a space-saving design that also simplifies the circuit board layout. Conductor tracks can be made a lot lighter and more direct because they don’t have to be arranged around other components, which makes the board design simpler.

Harting also claims increased reliability as a further benefit. In the past, sockets and transformers made by different manufacturers had to be combined, which could sometimes be problematic. The Harting solution is a mutually compatible unit, providing greater process security. With 10Gbit and max PoE+, M12 Magnetics is well suited as a miniaturised interface for Power and Data.
