EPSG presents edge-capable controllers at Hannover Messe

An implementation of edge computing for the IoT uses controllers to perform data pre-processing and send aggregated data directly to the cloud. Solutions are designed to make edge architectures easy to implement.

The Ethernet POWERLINK Standardization Group (EPSG) demonstrated an implementation of edge computing for the Industrial IoT at Hannover Fair. EPSG members had controllers on display to perform data preprocessing and send aggregated information directly to the cloud. These solutions are designed to make edge computing architectures easy to implement. Communication with the cloud relies on OPC UA transmitted via the AMQP or MQTT protocols.


At Hannover Messe 2017, the EPSG presented controllers for implementing edge computing architectires.

Contact-free rotary transmitter

Another highlight of the EPSG booth was a live robotics demo featuring a contact-free rotary joint from SPINNER. These no-wear devices transmit POWERLINK data with a full speed of 100 Mbps, and the bit error rate is reported to be less than 1x10-12. Increased cycle times due to faulty data packets, like those that can occur in slip-ring systems, can be eliminated.
