IIoT / Industry 4.0 solutions The technologies developed to create Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 solutions are coming into sharper focus with major announcements. The Industrial Internet Consortium and Plattform Industrie 4.0 have developed an ongoing collaboration aimed at technology developments. Recently, the two groups announced the release of a joint white paper representing an architectural and interoperability alignment between the Industrial Internet Reference Architecture (IIRA) and Reference Architecture Model for Industrie 4.0 (RAMI4.0). This is the first substantial report on the joint effort between these two organizations, since their collaboration about one and half years ago. In another recent report, the ARC Advisory Group concluded that OPC UA is wellpositioned to serve as the data connectivity foundation for companies looking to deploy IIoT and I4.0 based solutions. The study predicts that the existing global OPC installed base of over 45 million units is expected to expand 45% annually for the next 5 years. Key contributing factors to the continued success of OPC UA include the scalability, performance, and robustness of the technology and the large community of end-users, vendors, and other standards bodies actively working with the OPC Foundation to best utilize OPC UA in their applications. In addition, there is a strong push among networking and automation suppliers to promote and accelerate the introduction and influence of OPC UA TSN. Moxa released a joint position paper with contributions by an impressive list of 14 major suppliers: "OPC UA TSN, A New Solution for Industrial Communication" that was organized by B&R Industrial Automation. See the article starting on page 22 which introduces OPC UA TSN as a vendor-independent successor technology that is able to fulfill current and future industrial communication requirements while leveraging the cost benefits of standard Ethernet hardware. OPC UA TSN has backing from a growing group of suppliers that OPC UA over TSN gives the OPC UA communication standard real-time capabilities and deterministic network behavior. That target is specifically customers embracing IIoT and Industry 4.0 needs for a unified network infrastructure that is based on an open standard that allows data from different machines and controllers to be captured, transmitted, and communicated for better collaboration. This unprecedented amount of overall collaboration is moving IIoT and Industry 4.0 efforts forward, and should continue to unfold during the remainder of 2018.
